What does the 5X upgrade bonus do exactly?

For example, if an upgrade originally increase range by 5% per lvl, the aob will increase 5x5% = 25% per lvl. There are maximum 3 lvl upgrades per type of upgrade, so maximum 15% => 75% in this case.
It seems the aob still work for higher multiple (change 5 to higher value), even there is negative % bonus, eg. firerate and unit upgrade cost decreasing, especially cost decreasing become gaining money when upgrading unit during battle, if the multiple is high enough (the upgrade cost became negative).
